Despite current therapies that can alleviate the symptoms of OCD, there is still much room for advancement in the realm of OCD treatments. It is important for pharmacists to be informed of the symptoms and medication management strategies of a patient with OCD.

Description: Drug abuse and dependence are on the rise. According to the 2007 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), an estimated 5.2 million persons aged 12 or older were current users of prescription pain relievers for nonmedical purposes. The burden of opioid dependence is influenced by a variety of factors, including recognition of dependence, a fear of being stigmatized, comorbid conditions, and other barriers interfering with treatment; for example, up to 47% of patients who seek treatment for opioid dependence have documented psychiatric comorbidities. Given the challenges in the terminology of addiction, a rise in abuse rates, and the difficulty of managing opioid dependence, it is important for managed care audiences to understand this problem. Communication between managed care professionals and network providers may prevent further growth in prescription pain reliever abuse rates, and help to promote the proper use of opioids. Description: In the past, Medicare Advantage plans have been viewed as a potential threat to pharmacy providers, especially in the presence of exclusive networks. There is no denying that the market is moving toward MA plans, and the challenge for community pharmacists is to find a place in the equation. A real opportunity exists in the MA environment for pharmacists looking to partner with managed care plans for whom pharmacist-provided MTM is valued, generic utilization is encouraged, and incentives are aligned. Plans are seeking pharmacist partners to utilize their unique skills to keep patients healthy. This program will examine MA plans and discuss potential outreach opportunities for pharmacists to work with plans and improve the health outcomes of Medicare beneficiaries.

Description: Optimizing Care for the Older Adult with Diabetes is a knowledge-based CE activity that addresses the diagnosis, treatment, and special considerations in older patients with diabetes. This course will review the prevalence of and risk factors for diabetes in the older population. Participants will learn about the diagnosis and treatment goals for older adults as well as the basics for selecting the appropriate pharmacologic therapy. Additionally, this activity will describe the role of diabetes self-management education in minimizing the complications of diabetes.
Description: Arterial and venous thromboses are major causes of morbidity and mortality. Arterial thrombosis is the most common cause of myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke and limb gangrene. Venous thrombosis, such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), may lead to pulmonary embolism (PE), which can be fatal. Anticoagulants are the foundation for prevention and treatment of venous and arterial thromboembolic diseases. Heparins and vitamin K antagonists were discovered more than 60 years ago and have proven effectiveness. By educating themselves about the various conditions and treatment options, pharmacists can better assist their patients.
Description: Osteoporosis is a major public health threat for 44 million Americans. One out of every two women and one in four men over 50 will have an osteoporosis-related fracture in their lifetime. The estimated national direct expenditures for osteoporosis and related fractures total $14 billion each year. Inadequate diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis result in a higher risk of fractures than is necessary. Additionally studies have reported that medication compliance rates range from 40 to 55% at one year after initial dose for this patient population. Osteoporotic treatment needs long-term patient compliance. This program will show how the community pharmacist as the nation's most accessible healthcare professional can play a key role in identifying new cases of osteoporosis, educating patients on osteoporosis, and improving patient compliance with medications.
