The economic impact of patient non-adherence has been estimated at nearly $100 billion per year in increased hospitalizations, doctor visits, lab tests, and nursing home admissions. The human toll may be even higher in terms of diseases not treated, decreased quality of life, and preventable deaths. Community pharmacists can play a vital role in assuring that patients take their medications as directed. And patients are ready for this option. The same study found that consumers appeared open to tapping into the unique expertise of their pharmacist to improve medication adherence. This program focuses on how independent pharmacists across the country are tackling this problem and increasing compliance, patient outcomes and profits.

Description: Community acquired pneumonia (CAP), a serious infection of the pulmonary parenchyma, is most often seen in the winter months. It has an annual incidence of between 1 percent and 12 percent, and is responsible for millions of office visits, 500,000 hospitalizations and 45,000 deaths. People over 65 have an increased incidence of CAP, resulting in more than 900,000 episodes each year in the United States. It is the fourth overall cause of death in this patient population. CAP is also one of the leading causes of death in the world and is the leading cause of death due to an infection in the United States. Pharmacists can be an important resource in helping recognize and treat this condition.

Description: A practice-based research network (PBRN) is "a group of ambulatory practices devoted principally to the primary care of patients, affiliated with each other (and often with an academic or professional organization) to investigate questions related to community based practice." Developing community pharmacy PBRNs can provide value for patient care, communities, and pharmacist practitioners.
Description: According to the U.S. Census Bureau, more than 60 million people live in rural areas and it has been well
documented that these Americans face specific challenges to accessing, utilizing, and paying for quality
healthcare. Despite 20% of Americans living in rural areas, only 10% of the nation's physicians practice in
rural areas, with access to and availability of mental health specialists, such as psychiatrists, psychologists,
psychiatric nurses, and social workers significantly lacking. Integrating mental and medical health in
these rural areas has been a focus of many states to provide access and health education to providers and
patients. It is critical that best practices implemented throughout the nation are shared among clinicians
so that all providers can collaborate and improve their knowledge and performance, gain insights to the
latest evidence, and provide optimal care services to patients and their families. Evolving technology has
provided new opportunities to provide access to services and address barriers presented to patients and
physicians practicing in remote rural communities. As technology improves, costs decrease and access
increases--these forces help to create opportunities for increased collaborative care management. This
neuroscienceCME Webcast will present key insights to better integrate primary care and mental health
services, and address the unique challenges and performance gaps identified in rural populations.

The challenges are to sift through the vast amount of information and gather what is necessary to improve and individualize patient care, design and implement a plan to increase the health literacy of patients using Internet resources, and to focus on using websites and databases that serve to improve the practice of pharmacy. Description: Multiple sclerosis (MS) affects 400,000 Americans and is the leading nontraumatic cause of neurological disability in young
adults. Although MS is progressive, it is not fatal, and patients generally have a normal lifespan. However, progressive

offer neurologists and primary care physicians direction to improve the differential diagnosis and develop strategies to

Description: Congress has been regulating the importation and manufacture of controlled drugs since the early 1900s. In 1970 the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) was enacted into law by Congress as Title II of the Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act. The CSA legislation created five schedules of controlled drugs with varying qualifications for a substance to be included in each. New laws continue to be enacted along with agency regulations. Knowing all these laws and regulations and complying with them will continue to be a challenge. This article offers tips and advice to help cut through some of the complexities involved with controlled substances.
