Description: Optimal management of bipolar disorder begins with accurate diagnosis. The Depression and Bipolar Alliance reported that the misdiagnosis rate is 67% for bipolar patients with the most common misdiagnoses being unipolar depression (60%), anxiety disorder (26%), schizophrenia (18%), and borderline or antisocial personality disorder (17%). When diagnosis is inaccurate or delayed, initial therapy is not properly derived or promptly delivered. Description: There are numerous ways for pharmacists to work toward increasing longevity and quality of life and reducing health disparities in the general population. Healthy People 2010, a public-health publication of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, lays out a variety of ways that pharmacists can improve patient outcomes. A primary way that pharmacies and pharmacists can become involved in improving public health is to provide patient-care services, among them medication therapy management (MTM), immunization services, and smoking cessation programs. These types of patient care services are appealing because pharmacists are able to use their extensive education to monitor therapies and improve outcomes. Some services are also eligible for reimbursement through Medicare Part D, Tricare, and some private insurers.

Description: Transplant physicians/surgeons and the transplant team need to be continually exposed to critical thinking, especially thinking focused at the individual patient level; and must become more aware of patient risk-stratification before, during, and after transplantation to optimize graft and patient outcomes. Multiple patient demographic factors including comorbidities and immunological risk assessment necessitate the employment of multiple tests and assays to assess the viability of the transplant, inclusive of potential immunosuppression strategies to mitigate risk of organ rejection. This case study (preceded by the core activity) will review the short- and long-term complications of renal transplantation and immunosuppressive therapy. Salient points of both controversy and clinical interpretation will be highlighted by our faculty in order to draw out the nuances of balancing the continual goal of preventing and monitoring graft and organ rejection with adverse events over the transplant continuum. Case studies that simulate the numerous complexities involved with treating, monitoring, and managing renal transplant patients over the long-term will be presented in later modules associated with this activity.

Description: Does having a seizure mean epilepsy, or is it an isolated neurological event? Failure to recognize diagnostic
uncertainty between the epilepsies and non-epileptic events may be a factor in high rates of misdiagnosis.
Many patients who have been misdiagnosed as having epilepsy have had previous EEGs interpreted as
epileptiform that contributed to the misdiagnosis of epilepsy. Patients are often faced with the need to
tolerate complex cocktails of medications over long periods of time causing side effects of these chronic
medications to be of concern for both physicians and their patients. Pharmacologic management of patients
with epilepsy is one of the greatest unmet needs of the disease. It is important that clinicians are aware
of the evidence for current and emerging therapies so they can individualize care of their patients. There
is no real "Gold Standard" of guidelines for improving diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy, but clinicians
need to be aware of the most recent guidelines and how they can incorporate them in their practice. In this
